Hi everyone, welcome back to my warm corner.. ✨
Today, I want to talk about something that has been heavy on my heart lately. We live in an era where technology was supposed to bring us closer, but sometimes I feel it’s only building walls between us and the true joy of living.
A Perfect Sunday Plan
It all started yesterday. It was Sunday, and I had promised my son a family trip to the beach. We planned some activities, and I woke up early with a heart full of excitement. With summer approaching, the weather was absolutely perfect—warm, sunny, and ideal for a seaside escape.
I spent the morning preparing everything we might need: fresh sandwiches, cold juices, and some delicious snacks. My son made sure his football was the first thing in the car, and I made sure my diary was with me, hoping to capture some thoughts for a new blog post.
We set off, and I couldn't hide my excitement. Even though I live in a place that feels more like a quiet village and the beach is only a 30-minute drive away, it felt like forever since I last saw the sea. This year’s winter was exceptionally freezing, making beach trips a distant dream—until now!
Arrival at the Shore
When we arrived, the scene was beautiful. Families were scattered across the sand, all seeking a break from the routine. As I was setting up our spot, my son immediately grabbed his ball and started playing. My husband and I sat together, chatting and enjoying the breeze. As I’ve mentioned before, I always try to seize these moments to strengthen our bond; it’s so important for our mental well-being and our relationship.
Soon, my son asked me to play with him, and of course, I couldn’t say no! As we were kicking the ball around, I noticed something that broke my heart.
The Sad Reality of Modern Parenting
There was a family sitting near us: a mother, a father, and two young children. Both parents were completely glued to their phones. The children were playing listlessly, looking bored and constantly glancing back at us, and then at their parents. It was as if they were comparing the two scenes: one where a mother was running and laughing with her child, and another where parents were physically present but mentally miles away.
My son whispered to me, "I really feel sorry for those kids, Mom."
When I asked him why, he said, "Just look at their eyes. I think they wish one of their parents would come and play with them instead of scrolling through those phones. How can anyone ignore this beautiful view for a screen?"
His words hit me like a cold wave. I could hear the sound of short videos (Reels or TikToks) coming from the mother’s phone. The children’s eyes were filled with a quiet sadness that they shouldn't have to carry on a holiday.
The Deception of Social Media
Nearby, I saw a group of young girls busy filming themselves, singing and dancing for a camera. It was a disheartening sight. Social media has tricked us into believing that "documenting" life is more important than "living" it. Scrolling through mindless videos and chasing TikTok trends has become more valuable than meditation, genuine play, or simply breathing in the salty air.
When did we become this boring? When did we start preferring a glass screen over a real, meaningful memory? In my opinion, this constant digital consumption is spoiling our minds and leading us toward a sort of "early digital Alzheimer’s," where we forget how to connect with the world around us.
Capturing Memories, Not Just Content
At one point, I asked my son for permission to take a few photos for my blog. I was honestly worried he might think I was becoming "one of them." I explained that these photos were for us to cherish when he grows up—reminders of the beautiful time we spent together and the values we hold dear as a family.
I found myself wishing I could wake up in the 80s or 90s. No smartphones, no internet, no tablets. Just the raw, unfiltered joy of life that technology has slowly taken away from us.
A Dose of Reflection
We need to reclaim our lives. We need to put the phones down and look into the eyes of our loved ones. Life is happening right now, outside of the screen, and it is too beautiful to be missed.
I was with you, Nourell, writing from my little corner of the world, sending you your daily dose of sparkle.. ✨
